HACA is committed to corporate and environmental sustainability. The agency is working to conserve energy and decrease HACA’s impact on the environment through the following initiatives:
Recycling
The Austin City Council set a Zero Waste goal to reduce waste by 75 percent by 2020 and 90 percent by 2040. To help achieve this goal, HACA has conveniently located recycling containers near trash containers throughout its 18 properties. Residents and staff can place cardboard boxes, paper, plastic and glass bottles and jars, and aluminum cans in the recycling containers.
For more information about recycling at HACA, please contact your property management office. For more information about recycling in Austin, visit AustinRecycles.com, email
CommercialRecycling@austinrecycles.com, or call 3-1-1.
Thurmond Heights Modernization
Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Thurmond Heights recently underwent a multi-phase/multi-year external and internal modernization project of all 144 of its units. All units and buildings received insulation, energy-efficient windows, upgraded electrical systems to support tankless water heating and central air conditioning. All buildings also received new exterior siding and trim made of sustainable materials. Residents have experienced effective cooling of their units during the summer, significant decreases in their electric bills, and reliable hot water. HACA’s initiative at Thurmond Heights earned a National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials Award of Merit.
