October marks Housing America Month, a time to spotlight the transformative power of affordable housing in our cities and communities. At the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA), we know that housing is about more than shelter—it’s the foundation for a strong local economy, thriving families, and a more equitable future.
This year, we’re proud to release our 2024–25 Annual Report, a powerful snapshot of how HACA is using housing as a tool for economic mobility and public good. From rental assistance and resident services to major redevelopment efforts, the report shows the measurable return on public investment and the stories of residents driving change in their own lives.
Highlights from this year’s report:
We provided over $93 million in rental assistance, supporting more than 2,400 families each month through Housing Choice Vouchers and other programs.
Participants in our Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program increased their income by an average of $13,500, reducing reliance on public support and gaining greater financial independence.
FSS participants also saved a combined $87,317 in escrow—a 513% increase over last year—demonstrating that stable housing can lead to real wealth-building.
Redevelopment of legacy properties like Chalmers Courts and Rosewood Courts is creating modern, dignified housing rooted in East Austin history—with new units, on-site services, and stronger infrastructure.
The report also features stories from residents like Beverly Honore, who has lived at Rosewood, Santa Rita, and Chalmers over the years. Her voice reflects what our mission is all about: hope, transformation, and the power of being seen and heard.
