The Housing Authority of the City of Austin provides transitional housing for families in need until they can get back on their feet again. Through programs like the Family Self-Sufficiency Program and the Home Ownership Program, the agency works to assist these families into self-sufficiency so they can build a better life for themselves.

The Six Star Resident program offers affordable housing opportunities to residents while they work to overcome the barriers to becoming independent and to act as an incentive for public housing residents to become free from public assistance.

“This is a program for residents to realize self-sufficiency,” Veronica Macon, director of Community Development, said. “HACA staff are eager to work with the ‘Six Star Residents’ so that they can become future homeowners.”

Qualifying residents will have the opportunity to move to one of two apartment properties owned by Austin Affordable Housing Corp., a nonprofit subsidiary of HACA, and sign an initial 12-month lease at a discounted rate. What this does is move a family out of public housing and on their way to being able to live completely on their own and maybe even become a homeowner. The program is intended for those who are ready to move out of public housing but aren’t able to purchase a home yet.

Once the family is housed, all public housing assistance is relinquished, and the program must be completed within three years.

As part of the program, each family will be required to pay rent on time, take care of the apartment, be drug-free and free from dependence on alcohol, keep their children in school, maintain full-time employment and be registered to vote.

To qualify, interested participants will be subject to a credit and rental history check, must pass a criminal background check and must not have any outstanding balances owed to HACA. Additionally, participants must have lived in public housing for a minimum of one year and be in good standing. The maximum number of family members will also be limited to no more than two times the number of bedrooms in the apartment.

Download and fill out the program application below and bring it to the HACA Central Office to find out if you're eligible to be a Six Star Resident! Additional program requirements will be explained to you at sign-up.
