OFFICER APPRECIATION DAY TO EMPHASIZE COMMUNITY POLICING

WHAT: K-9 police dogs, fingerprinting kits, police cars, bicycles and ATVS as well as about 10 officers will be surrounding Booker T. Washington Terraces Friday. If it sounds like a crime scene, it isn't.

In honor of its partnerships with the Austin Police Department, Austin Independent School District and Austin Community College, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin is recognizing its courtesy officers at its first Officer Appreciation Day.

“The intent of this event is to show appreciation for those officers who work for the housing authority and contribute to the increased safety within our communities,” Wenceslao Santiago, vice president of Housing Operations, said.

HACA works diligently to ensure its residents feel safe by paying for courtesy officers to patrol its properties, which have all benefited from a high police presence within the last few years. Officer Michael Crumrine, the agency’s APD liaison, works with HACA in providing useful information that empowers the housing authority to measure its communities from a law enforcement perspective.

The APD District Representative for Booker T. Washington Terraces, Carlos Casas, along with AISD Chief Pat Fuller will give a keynote address on the benefits of police officers uniting with residents within various communities. Food and festivities highlighting the benefits of community policing will follow.

WHEN: Friday, May 13, 2 to 4 p.m.

WHERE: Booker T. Washington Terraces, located at 905 Bedford St. in East Austin

WHAT ELSE: The Housing Authority of the City of Austin is a public agency whose business is to ensure that safe, quality affordable housing opportunities exist for families of low income; break the poverty cycle by serving as a catalyst for our residents to become economically self-sufficient; create meaningful partnerships to maximize available community resources for our residents; and efficiently and effectively meet federal, state and local mandates.
