COUNTERACTING CRIME IN A NORTH AUSTIN NEIGHBORHOOD
HACA and APD combine forces to make area safer for families
WHAT: Residents of Colony North will be welcoming
a new neighbor to their community Thursday. Members of the Housing Authority
of the City of Austin in cooperation with the Austin Police Department will
celebrate the opening of a new pilot police storefront in the Thurmond Heights
community located within the Colony North neighborhood, which is located off
of North Lamar.
The creation of the pilot police storefront is an effort by both HACA and
APD to rid the problem of criminal behavior in the Colony North neighborhood.
"We are contributing to an increased presence in the community and making
the whole Lamar corridor healthier with our community station," said Wenceslao
Santiago, director of housing operations.
The new pilot police storefront creates an area meant for police officers
to gather daily when policing properties. In addition, the office will be used
as a point of contact for the 350 residents of the Thurmond Heights community.
HACA prioritizes safety and community watch efforts for all of its quality
affordable housing developments.
The event will feature a Mobile Health Center, child ID kits and Amigos En
Azul, APD’s Hispanic Officers Association, at the grill as an opportunity
for members of the community to meet their neighbors.
"With Thursday's opening we are fostering our continued relationship
and spirit of cooperation with the APD," Santiago said. Additionally,
HACA will be working with the new APD liaison, Officer Michael Crumrine, as
he plans to coordinate neighborhood watch programs to help eliminate criminal
activity.
WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005 from 3 to 5 p.m.
WHERE: Thurmond Heights located at 8426 Goldfinch Court
WHAT ELSE: The Housing Authority of the City of Austin is a public agency
whose business is to ensure that safe, quality affordable housing opportunities
exist
for
families of low income; break the poverty cycle by serving as a catalyst for
our residents to become economically self-sufficient; create meaningful partnerships
to maximize available community resources for our residents; and efficiently
and effectively meet federal, state and local mandates. For more information,
