HACA Resident Demographics

Residents of the Housing Authority of the City of Austin are a diverse group. Following are some statistics on the population we serve:

Public Housing and HCVP Statistics—Combined
· 18,656 Austinites are housed through HACA’s Public Housing and HCV programs.
· Of the adults living in Public Housing and HCVP, 80 percent are women, and 20 percent are men.
· There are currently 3,900 people on the public housing waiting list and 4,540 on the HCVP waiting list.
· The average number of days people spend on the lists prior to being housed is 284 and 633 days, respectively.
· The average income of a HACA resident is $8,813.
· Only 7 percent of HACA households contain a married couple.
· 3,557 elderly and disabled Austinites are housed through public housing and HCV programs.
· Of all HACA residents, 33 percent are Hispanic, 15 percent are Caucasian, 51 percent are black, 1 percent are American Indian and less than 1 percent are Asian/Pacific.
· There are 10,505 children who live in public housing or HCVP homes.
· The average number of years spent in public housing is six, while HCVP is three.

Public Housing Statistics—General
· 28 percent of adults living in public housing are gainfully employed.
· The average family size is 2.47.
· Of all public housing residents, 47 percent are Hispanic, 14 percent are Caucasian, 37 percent are black and 1 percent is American Indian / Asian/Pacific.
· The average income of a public housing resident living at a family site is $7,697.
· Total number of people on Temporary Assistance to Needy Families is 284.
· There are 1,443 females (76 percent) and 453 males (24 percent) living in public housing.
Public Housing Statistics—Family Sites
· Average age of HOH is 33.
· Average income is $6,503.09.
· Average monthly rent is $76.72.
· Units with handicapped or disabled individuals: 473.
· Average number of individuals living in a unit: 2.28.
· Units with grandchildren: 103.
· 63 percent of children are Hispanic, 32 percent are black and 5 percent are Caucasian.
· There are 902 children ages 0-4, 705 ages 5-10, 464 ages 11-14 and 346 ages 15-18.

Public Housing Statistics—Senior Sites
· Average age at an elderly site is 59.
· Average income at elderly sites is $8,155.
· Average number of individuals living in the unit: 1.09.
· Average monthly rent at an elderly site is $178.69.
· Number of disabled (non-elderly) living at elderly sites: 285.
· Number of non-disabled elderly living at elderly sites: 99.
· Age of youngest resident living at elderly site: 19.
· Oldest resident living at elderly site: 104.
· Average age of residents under 59: 46.58.
· Average age of residents over 59: 72.9.

Housing Choice Voucher Program Statistics
· The average family size is 2.76.
· Of all HCV residents, 27 percent are Hispanic, 16 percent are Caucasian, 55 percent are black and 2 percent are American Indian / Asian/Pacific.
· The average income of a HCVP resident is $10,670.
· Total number of people on Temporary Assistance to Needy Families: 695
· There are 4,562/88 percent females and 622/12 percent males living in public housing.
