Appointed by the mayor of the City of Austin, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin Board of Commissioners charts the direction of the agency. The commissioners adopt bylaws and resolutions approving the executive director to implement policy. Among their principle responsibilities are providing leadership to the staff and community at large; advocating for local assisted housing programs; adopting policies to govern the operations of the public housing authority and approving the agency’s one-year and five-year plans; adopting operating budgets and ensuring that the authority works within all federal, state and local laws and is in compliance with HUD regulations; hiring a qualified executive director to oversee the operations of the agency; and establishing policies to prevent mismanagement, fraud and discrimination within the programs overseen by the housing authority.
